Dr. Taryn Allen is a licensed psychologist and founder of Bankside Psychology, LLC. She has expertise in Evidenced-based therapy and Neuropsychological assessment.

Dr. Allen received her undergraduate degree in neuroscience from Trinity College (Connecticut), a masters in psychology and education from Columbia University, and a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Duke University. She completed her predoctoral internship at Duke University Medical Center (with a dual specialization in pediatric neuropsychology and evidenced-based therapy), and underwent additional postdoctoral training at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Subsequently, Dr. Allen joined the National Cancer Institute at the National Institutes of Health in Washington, DC, where she worked for 7 years before transitioning to a special volunteer researcher.

 

Dr. Allen is extensively trained in evidenced-based psychotherapy and neuropsychological assessment.

In her therapeutic work with clients, Dr. Allen leans heavily on acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and mindfulness-based approaches. She uses these approaches to address a wide-range of concerns throughout the lifespan, such as anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, general stress, parenting challenges, and health-related issues such as pain or adjustment to a medical condition. In addition, Dr. Allen has specific expertise in neuropsychological assessment for children and young adults. She assesses cognitive (including intellectual), academic, social-emotional, and behavioral functioning to better understand patterns of strengths and weaknesses underlying current concerns or experiences. This information is then used to identify interventions, supports, and services to improve functioning across different contexts (such as school, home, work). Learn more about assessment services.

For more than fifteen years, Dr. Allen has worked alongside preeminent researchers and clinicians who pioneered many of the gold standard therapies and assessment techniques in the field. She also has received several competitive grants and fellowships in support of her own research collectively aimed at developing more effective and efficient therapies based on CBT, ACT, and mindfulness for children and adults. She have authored more than 50 peer-reviewed publications and has been invited to speak on psychological wellbeing, mindfulness, and neuropsychological functioning at professional conferences throughout the country. Collectively, these experiences have afforded her a deep understanding of strategies that work and how best to adapt them to meet individual needs. 

Dr. Allen is a native of Westport, Conn., and, after nearly two decades away, she moved back to the area with her husband and four children in 2019. In her free time, she relishes good books, loves sharing meals with good friends, and delights in her family.
